The Word Ngadpuk.
Ngadpuk is the traditional Batjamalh name for Channel Point and its surrounds. It is situated approximately 240 kilometres southwest of Darwin opposite the Peron Islands and between the Daly River and the Finniss River.
Ngadpuk is the birthplace of, and a significant burial grounds for, a number of Wadjigan people and their ancestors.
Ngadpuk is significant as it is the birthplace of Margaret (Maggie) Rivers, the grandmother and great-grandmother to the current directors of the Corporation.
The Logo.
The Logo of Ngadpuk comprised of a green sea turtle. The green sea turtle is the totem of Maggie Rivers which has been passed down to her descendants.
The Wadjigan People.
Identity as a member of the Wadjigan group can be inherited through either father or mother. Adoption is also seen as a legitimate means of social affiliation.
Sites of conception, birth, death, burial and ceremony also bestow a degree of spiritual affiliation. The absence of a personal affiliation to a site within the traditional homelands does not prevent an individual from having a strong personal attachment to these sites as they relate to their ancestors.
An apical ancestor for an Aboriginal clan would be a common ancestor that the clan traces its descent from. The term "apical" is used because this ancestor would be at the top of the clan's genealogy. In the case of clans, the apical ancestor may be a real or fictional ancestor chosen for the purpose of unifying the group. If the apical ancestor of an Aboriginal clan is non-human, it is known as a totem.
